Gekonnt hat er hier einen ausklingenden Herbsttag mit seiner Lichtstimmung und Atmosphäre eingefangen. Ganz still liegt das Holzboot am Steg vertaut, die Sommerfrischler sind schon abgereist. Das Wasser des Sees hat wohl noch ein wenig die Wärme des Sommers gespeichert, das Schilf am Ufer hat schon die braune Herbstfärbung angenommen. Die Landschaft im Hintergrund lässt noch die saftigen Sommerwiesen erahnen, bald wird alles in die Farben des Herbstes gehüllt sein und die Natur sich auf den nahenden Winter einstellen. Die für diese Zeit des Jahres typische Lichtstimmung ist perfekt ins Malerische umgesetzt. Die ferne Landschaft, die doch gestochen scharf und nah herangerückt wirkt, die Färbung des Wassers und die Licht- und Schattenreflexionen darin sind jedem vertraut, der am Abend eines noch warmen Herbsttages an einem See entlangspaziert ist. Die in ruhigen Horizontalen angelegte Komposition wird durch das schräggestellte Holzboot unterbrochen. Somit ist es das Boot, das den ersten Blick des Betrachters auf sich zieht. Noch liegt es im Wasser, aber bald wird es sein Besitzer vor der nahenden Winterkälte und dem Eis in Sicherheit an Land bringen müssen. Dann wird der letzte Hinweis auf menschliche Anwesenheit aus dem Bild verschwunden sein. Das Boot steht gleichsam als Sinnbild für den Menschen, der sich die Natur zunutze macht und in ihr und von ihr lebt. Die figurale Darstellung selbst ist in Stoitzners Komposition kein Thema. He has skilfully captured a fading autumn day, its light and atmosphere. The wooden boat is motionlessly moored to the jetty; the holidaymakers have all left. The lake’s water probably still has some of summer’s warmth but the reeds on the bank are already clad in the brown shades of autumn. In the background landscape we can still see a glimmer of lush summer meadows, but soon everything will be shrouded in the colours of autumn and nature will start getting ready for the approaching winter. The light, which is typical for this time of year, has been rendered perfectly in paint. The distant landscape that is crystal clear and appears to have been drawn forwards, the shade of the water and its reflections of light and shadow are familiar to anyone who has strolled beside a lake on a warm autumn evening. The composition has been built up in calm horizontals which are interrupted by the diagonal of the wooden boat. As a result, it is the boat that first attracts the viewer’s gaze. It is still in the water but its owner will soon have to bring it to land and to safety, before the approaching chill of winter and the ice. Then the last trace of human presence will have vanished from the picture. The boat is like a symbol of man who makes use of nature and lives both in and from the natural world.
