Der Tauernhof zählt zu den bevorzugten Motiven von Alfons Walde in den Dreißigerjahren. Das Sujet vermittelt eine gedankliche wie kompositorische Einheit von Natur, Architektur und Mensch. Die bei etwa gleichzeitig entstandenen Werken spürbare genreartige und erzählfreudige Schilderung vom Geschehen in der Dorfstraße oder am Dorfbrunnen ist hier der Stille und Einsamkeit in der alpinen Natur gewichen.
Der hoch über dem Tal liegende, aus Holz gezimmerte Bauernhof mit dem flachen Dach und den die Dachschindelbretter beschwerenden Steinen schiebt sich von links in die Bildmitte und wird von zwei auf dem rechten Wiesenhügel gelagerten Stadeln begleitet. Durch seine diagonal in den Raum strebende Lage wird die Distanz zum Talraum noch betont. Dominant und fast als Gegenposition zur von Menschenhand gebauten Architektur ragt der mächtige Gebirgszug als „Bauwerk der Natur“ im Hintergrund empor. Das Grau der Felspartien mit den blauen Schatten und das tonige Weiß des Schnees korrespondiert mit dem Blaugrau der Schattenzone im Tal und dem satten Grün der Wiese rechts im Vordergrund. Als einziger illustrativer und folkloristischer Akzent wirken die roten Geranien am Balkon. In dieser Idylle nimmt der Mensch als Staffagefigur eine fast untergeordnete Position ein, überhöht aber dadurch die unendliche Allmacht der Natur.
Alfons Walde verstand es in den beginnenden Dreißigerjahren, einen pastosen Pinselduktus einzusetzen, um dem Motiv eine plastisch-räumliche Wirkung zu verleihen. In der Tonigkeit der Farbpalette mit nuancenreichen Abstufungen von Grau- und Blauwerten und in den Lichthöhungen und Schattierungen erzielt er eine neue „Qualität“ seines malerischen und koloristischen Konzepts.

The Tauernhof was one of Alfons Walde’s favourite subjects in the 1930s. The subject conveys a unity of nature, architecture and man, both in ideas and composition. Here the genre-like and narrative depictions of life on the village streets or by the well, which the artist painted at about the same time, have been replaced by the stillness and solitude of Alpine scenery.
The wooden farmhouse, high above the valley with a flat roof covered with stones to weigh down the shingle tiles, pushes into the centre of the picture from the left and is accompanied by two barns on the slope on the right. Its diagonal alignment that surges into the picture space emphasizes the distance from the valley. The range of mountains in the background towers up dominantly, like an ‘edifice of nature’ and acts almost as a counterbalance to the architecture built by human hand. The grey of the cliffs with the blue shadows and the tonal white of the snow corresponds with the bluish-grey of the shadows in the valley and the lush green of the meadow on the right in the foreground. The only illustrative and folkloric touches are the red geraniums on the balcony. In this idyll the person forming the staffage takes on an almost subordinate role, but simultaneously this accentuates nature’s infinite omnipotence.
In the early 1930s, Alfons Walde was able to use impastos to imbue the motif with a three-dimensional, spatial effect. In the tonality of his palette with nuanced gradations of grey and blue and in the highlights and shadows he achieved a new ‘quality’ in his painterly and colouristic concept.
