The extraction of the developed mabe pearl takes place after two seasons, as only during the summer seasons the colourful nacre is attached. Depending on the date of implantation, two to three years have passed.
The snails were removed from their shells and the flesh sold to the delicacy-market. The shells were cleaned and ground down from outside until the mabe pearls emerge.
The nuclei are removed and are replaced with a synthetic filling. The bottom-sides of the pearls are closed with thin round plates made from mother-of-pearl.
At this point the first quality-selection takes place and mis- or underdeveloped pearls are discarded. |
