Though there is no minimum size, the pearl scale typically starts at 8 mm.
The largest possible diameter with satisfactory height is limited by the reduced accumulation of nacre at the top. Generally the largest pieces are around 27 mm.

The different qualities of the surface range from nearly spotless and smooth to small and medium defects to obvious structures resembling the texture of an orange. Generally, the surface of Abalone nacre appears more flawed than that of Akoya- and Southsea-pearls

 | | Picture 20: The varied colours of the Abalone pearl
Depending on the diet and the pedigree of the Abalone, the Mabe pearl's colour-spectrum ranges from green over blue-green to blue and, less common, an iridescent colour play of pink and blue-green.
The different pearl farms control the colours by regulating water temperature and diet.
