The cold water surrounding New Zealand favours the formation of highly iridescent and colourful pearl-nacre.

The clear water and the rich food supply of New Zealand's moderate climate facilitates the intense development of the layers, alternately built up from nacre and conchiolin. Only this alteration causes the expressive lustre and the strong colours.
