This painting was created by the artist as part of a cycle "Four Seasons". Two other paintings of this series, "Spring" and "Winter", became famous through countless reproductions, posters and postcards spread all over the world. The "Four Seasons" cycle was obviously very popular at that time: the first reproductions are dated with 1910s.
Provenance: Conradin Baumann, Stuttgart, who acquired the painting directly from the artist (see inscription on stretcher on the reverse: "pour Monsieur Conradin Baumann/98. Seestrasse. Stuttgart - Edouard Bisson/artist peintre 47 Bd Berthier/Paris").
Edouard Bisson was born in Paris in 1856, was a pupil of Jean-Leon Gerome and member of Soc.des Artistes Francais. The artist regularly exhibited in Parisian Salon where he repeatedly received awards, as well as at the World Exhibitions in 1889 and 1900. In 1908 he was awarded Legion of Honor.
