In zahllosen Exkursionen zu Fuß und auf dem Motorrad erarbeiteten insbesondere die Brüder Prachensky, aber natürlich auch Alfons Walde und andere expressionistische Maler vor 1925 (dann begann die neusachliche Auffassung zu dominieren) ein dynamisches Bild des natürlichen und kulturellen Erbes Tirols. Das ganze Land diente dabei als Atelier, da es keine urbanen Kunstzentren gab – die Diskussion zwischen den Künstlern fand zuhause, vor dem Motiv oder ausnahmsweise im Schaufenster des Kunstsalons Unterberger in Innsbruck statt. In diesem Ambiente entstand auch das vorliegende Bild, das in der typisch expressiven Manier der Zeit um 1920 gehalten ist. Dunkle Farbgebung, dynamische Parallelstrichlagen und ondulierend darüber gemalte Details wie jene der Vegetation repräsentieren das Vibrierende, Aufgeregte der damaligen Weltsicht. Stilistisch steht Prachensky damit einmal näher bei Schiele einmal näher bei Kokoschka, dessen Frühwerk vor 1914 die Grundauffassung des Vorliegenden Bildes geschuldet zu sein scheint. HALL, PARISH CHURCH, 1920 Oil on cardboard, 83 x 69.5 cm Signed and dated (lower right): W.PRACHENSKY | 1920 The historic buildings of Hall in Tyrol and other towns on the Inn Valley were an important source of inspiration for the province’s emerging Expressionism. On countless excursions on foot and by motorbike the Prachensky brothers, and of course Alfons Walde and other Expressionist painters, created a dynamic picture of Tyrol’s natural and cultural heritage before 1925. After that, Neue Sachlichkeit began to dominate. The whole province was like a studio, for there were no urban art centres. As a result, discussions between artists took place at home, before the motif or, as an exception, in the window displays of Kunstsalon Unterberger in Innsbruck. It was in this ambience that this picture was created, painted in the typically expressive manner of the time around 1920. Dark colours, dynamic parallel lines with details, like those suggesting vegetation, painted over them in undulating strokes, represent what was pulsating and exciting in the world view of the time. Stylistically, Prachensky was sometimes closer to Schiele and sometimes closer to Kokoschka.
